You'll be delighted with our PAT (PAT testing) services and we can also do a lot more on our visit, providing added value. It's bad enough that the law forces businesses to have all their equipment PAT tested for health & safety reasons (did you know that?) and so you may as well get really good value for your hard earned money!

PAT testing: Electricity at the workplace

In addition to general health and safety legislation, electrical safety in the workplace is covered by the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989. The regulations require that employers take steps to limit the risk of injury from electricity to people working on or near to electrical systems. This includes both electrical installations and electrical equipment.

PAT testing: Electrical appliances

The Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 1994 set out minimum safety requirements for all new and second-hand electrical equipment, including devices, appliances and apparatus, supplied in Gerrards Cross and throughout the UK.

Any electrical equipment that is supplied for the first time will be supplied as new equipment - subsequently it will be supplied, e.g. hired out as second hand equipment. In both cases the regulations will apply. The regulations apply to most electrical equipment - consumer, commercial and industrial - operating between 50 volts and 1,000 volts AC or between 75 volts and 1,500 volts DC. All new and used equipment covered by the regulations, including Gerrards Cross hire tools, must be safe before being placed on the market.

Gerrards Cross Tool hire outlets should make sure that all electrical equipment is safe prior to each hire. Custom-built electrical appliances like neon signs must be safe and must meet the requirements of the regulations.

Portable appliance testing (PAT) is an important part of complying with electrical health and safety legislation. Regular PAT testing should be done where electrical equipment is used by employees or hired out. PAT testing should also be carried out after a piece of equipment has been serviced or repaired.

PAT testing: Wiring regulations

The Institute of Electrical Engineers (IEE) produces wiring regulations, which have been adopted as British Standard BS 7671. The IEE Wiring Regulations are included within the scope of the Building Regulations. Part P of the Building Regulations mainly covers electrical work done in domestic premises.

Gerrards Cross installers who do this type of work have either registered as a "competent person" under an approved self-certification scheme or will have all such work approved by a building inspector. Other professionals - like heating engineers - who do some electrical work in the course of their business can register with a special "defined competence" scheme.

PAT testing: Electromagnetic interference

Electrical equipment must, where applicable, comply with regulations that limit radio interference under the Electromagnetic Compatibility Regulations 1992. This includes custom-built electrical apparatus such as neon signs.
